Abstract
601,163. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. April 26, 1945, No. 10550. Convention date, May 2; 1944. [Class 74(ii)] The leg of split foot hosiery is knitted of two yarns which are separately fed and separately knitted at the auxiliary side of a circular, independent needle, machine having main and auxiliary cam blocks. One of the yarns is withdrawn during reciprocatory knitting of the foot, in which the sole part is completed with a yarn introduced and knitted at the main side of the machine, and both yarns are withdrawn during the formation of the heel and toe pockets. The auxiliary cam block has two switch cams 24, 25 Fig. 6, which are preceded by a clearing cam 29, 82, for knitting the yarns in succession during rotary knitting, the associated yarn feeders 7, 6, Fig. 2 (not shown) being individually movable towards and away from the feeding position under control of a cam drum. The yarn from each feeder is laid at the back of the sinker nibs as shown by 74, Fig. 17, and permits the newly formed loops to be evenly tensioned by the previous course 72, instead of the course 74' just knitted, being engaged by the sinker throat during the casting off operation, after which the sinker is withdrawn so that the last knitted course passes into the throat of the sinker. The radial position of the sinkers during the casting off operation may be varied by flopper cams, depending on the length of the loop drawn by the needles. Automatic means are provided for removing from operation, during reciprocatory knitting, needle clearing cams 29, 32, and lowering cam 31 and also, during the knitting of the heel and toe pockets, lowering cam 33. If some of the short butt needles are to be used with the long butt needles to form the instep, these short butt needles are raised during the last course of rotary knitting by jacks, and the remaining short butt needles pass across the auxiliary cam block at a low level without taking yarn. Specification 601,056 is referred to.
