Abstract

1,060,087. Knitting. M. NEBEL and E. NEBEL. Feb. 27, 1964 [March 4, 1963], No. 8239/64. Headings D1C and D1K. Run-resistant fabric comprises a course (a) in which the thread is knitted by every other needle with a long loop from the preceding course (a) into double thread stitches the alternate stitches being held on their needles and the thread being formed into long loops on these needles to be knitted with the stitches of the next course (a) and a course (b) in which the thread is knitted through the double thread stitches of the preceding course (a). The thread length of courses (a) is longer, e.g. twice as long as that of courses (b) and courses (b) may be knitted from thread of twice the denier of courses (a). The fabric is knitted on a circular knitting machine with alternate needles (N<SP>1</SP>), (N<SP>2</SP>) which respectively have butts (N<SP>1x</SP>), (N<SP>1y</SP>) and (N<SP>2x</SP>) , (N<SP>2y</SP>). In operation, the thread for course (a) is knitted by alternate needles (N<SP>2</SP>) and the large thread loops lie over high sinking points on the sinker nebs and on the open latches (Z) of needles (N<SP>1</SP>), the sinkers remaining in position to hold the loops. Needles (N<SP>2</SP>) then knit the thread of course (b) forming stitches on a lower sinking point (Pa) behind the nebs (Pb) with the intervening portions H lying on the stems of needles (N<SP>1</SP>) below the latches. Needles (N<SP>1</SP>) move slightly downwards and the sinkers may be withdrawn and returned before the second course (a) when needles (N<SP>1</SP>) knit double thread stitches and long loops are formed on the sinkers and on needles (N<SP>2</SP>). A second course (b) is then knitted on needles (N<SP>1</SP>). The needles may be selected by jacks (T<SP>1</SP>), (T<SP>2</SP>) operated by slides (O<SP>1</SP>), (O<SP>2</SP>). Cam (P<SP>7</SP>), Fig. 4 (not shown) brings the sinkers out of the needle circle to withdraw their nebs from the long loops and then cams (P‹), (P<SP>2</SP>) move them in earlier than normal to receive the long loops on their nebs. Course (a) may be produced over the nebs of only every other sinker. The machine may be used to knit a stocking and this may have a heel knitted by reciprocatory knitting.
