Abstract

790,961. Thermal switches. COLLIER, R. March 2, 1956, No. 6631/56. Class 38 (5). A thermal switch for controlling the supply of heat to a cooker hot plate comprises a bimetal 16 heated by a coil 17 and carrying a contact 15 which co-operates with a contact 19 on a springy member 18 which is pulled against its bias by a tension wire 20 connected to a terminal 21. The bi-metal 16 pivots about a plate 10 and is connected to a temperaturecompensating bi-metal 11 which follows the surface of a cam 14 so that the position of the contact 15 may be varied. On turning a knob 8 to close the contacts current flows through the wire 20 which expands and so increases the contact pressure. The bi-metal bends to open the contacts whereupon the wire 20 cools and contracts to give a positive opening action. A second switch 21a (Fig. 2) is controlled by a deep notch 24a in the edge of cam 14 and shortcircuits the thermal switch in the " Full " position. Minor notches 24 locate the cam in various positions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 705,918.
