Abstract

1,201,537. Temperature responsive actuating element. DIAMOND H CONTROLS Ltd. April 8, 1969 [April 10, 1968; July 31, 1968; Dec.12, 1968] Nos.17416/68; 36630/68 and 59221/68. Heading G1D. A temperature responsive actuator comprises a bi-metal element 1, an electrical heater 2 and a resilient coupling in the form of a rivet 4 and a spring washer 3 to allow relative movement between the bi-metal element and the flat heater upon heating and cooling of the actuator. In alternative constructions, the rivet may be hollow or be replaced by a screw and the washer 3 may be replaced by a coil spring surrounding the rivet. Also, a leaf spring may be secured to element 1, this engaging and holding the heater 2 against the bi-metal. The heater preferably comprises an insulating substrate 31 on which is deposited an electrically resistive film 30 with silver terminal tabs 25, 26, a hole 33 providing for attachment to the bi-metal element. The film 30 is divided to form two arms 28, 29 which are joined to the tabe 25 and this construction provides for greater heat generation at the portion of greatest flexing of the bi-metal element. The same effect can be produced by providing the film in the form of the spiral in the region of the hole 33.
