Abstract

788,856. Freewheel clutches. PARKINSON & COWAN, Ltd. June 24,1955 [June 30, 1954], No. 19221/54. Class 80 (2). A freewheel clutch between driving and driven shafts 10, 11 comprises a coiled spring 12, frictionally gripping the shaft ends, engaging at one end an abutment 13 on the driving-shaft and at the other engaging an abutment formed by a recess 18 in a cylinder 15 journalled on the driven shaft. The cylinder 15 is closed at its open end by a gland screw 16, journalled on the driving-shaft, and turned to adjust the distance between the two abutments which controls the compression of the coiled spring 12. A nut 17 locks the gland screw in position. Rotation of the shaft 10 in one direction causes the spring 12 to drive the driven shaft 11, while rotation in the reverse direction unwinds the spring and leaves the driven shaft free. The driven shaft 11 can over-run in either direction. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the axes of the driving and driven shafts are inclined to each other, and the cylinder 15 is correspondingly curved.
