898,183. Friction clutches. CURTISSWRIGHT CORPORATION. July 12, 1960, No, 24320/60. Class 80 (2). In a normally disengaged coil clutch the free coils of the main driving spring are tightened on the driven member by the friction torque produced upon arresting either a control sleeve or an auxiliary control spring, which are in contact so as normally to rotate together. In the arrangement according to Fig. 2 the main spring coils 22 engage the driving member 10 and are connected at the opposite end 32 to the control sleeve 30, the outer surface of which is engaged by the auxiliary control spring 35 which is of opposite hand to the spring 22. Normally clutch member 10, spring 22, sleeve 30 and spring 35 rotate together, with the coils of spring 22 clear of the driven member 17, but upon moving a member A into the path of a projecting portion 38 of spring 35 the latter is arrested and tightened upon sleeve 30, the torque on which serves to tighten the free coils of spring 22 on the driven member 17 to transmit the drive from member 10. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the auxiliary control spring comprises coils 55 engaging the inner surface of spring 50, and either integral with or connected to the end of the main spring 22<SP>1</SP> ; clutch engagement in this case is effected by arresting the sleeve 50 through an abutment 42<SP>1</SP>.
