Abstract
575,067. Free-wheel clutches. DODWELL, J. M. Dec. 3, 1943, No. 20274. [Class 80 (ii)] A free-wheel clutch comprises driving and driven members 5, 7 on shafts 6, 8 respectively with a strip of flexible and elastic material 9 arranged in the annular space between these members, one end of which is secured to a member 12 keyed to member 5 whilst the other end is free. On rotation of member 5 in the direction x the strip 9 is longitudinally compressed between key 12 and the free end of the strip which is in frictional contact with the member 7 assisted by a wedging roller 41. The compressed strip expands radially and laterally to fill the annular space and transmits the drive by friction. On over-run of the member 7 the strip resumes its normal shape and withdraws from contact with member 7. An overload device comprises an annular channelshaped member 15 which is a push fit within the member 7 and which is adapted to slip on overload. The strip 9 may be anchored to member 7 instead of member 5 and may be. provided with stretch limiting cords 11.
