Abstract

787,549. Photo-electric control of winding bobbins. ROSENKRANZ, C. G., HALSTENBACH, H., and PLUTTE, A., [trading as HALSTENBACH & CO.]. March 9, 1956 [April 19, 1955], No. 7509/56. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group IX] A method of controlling the mount of thread wound on to a bobbin uses the interruption by the winding of light falling on a photoelectric cell to control the winding process. In machines having the thread guide, in a bearing member moved parallel to the bobbin by a traversing gear as the winding proceeds, the apparatus for realizing the method is a gauging device arranged in the bearing member and consisting of a light source and a photo-cell connected via an amplifier to a control relay which responds when the cell illumination falls below a predetermined level, the relay acting on the traversing gear so that the bearing member is accelerated. In the embodiment described, light source 12 and photo-conductive cell 13 are fitted in bearing member 1 at the place corresponding to where the conical part of the winding merges into its cylindrical part. When light to the cell is blocked sufficiently for its resistance to increase to the point where valve 18 cuts off, contacts 19<SP>1</SP> of relay 19 energize control relay 22 whose armature is thereby attracted so as to engage pawl 23 in toothed wheel 35, movable around threaded spindle 11, which forms part of differential gear 32, 33, 34, 35. Wheel 35 being thus stopped, spindle 11 accelerates and member 1 moves further during each to and fro oscillation of thread guide 2 caused by roller 4 on rotating cam 6, and the winding diameter decreases. The resulting increased light into the photo-cell causes relay 19 to be energized, the control relay de-energized, and spindle 11 decelerated to its normal speed until the light beam is interrupted once more; a winding of uniform diameter is thus built up. The sensitivity of the gauging device can be increased by reducing the effective illuminated surface of the photo-cell, and by adjustment of potentiometer 21 in the amplifier the diameter wound can be varied. The Specification includes two variants of the optical system as shown in Fig. 1 (see Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) ; in one variant two mirrors are used.
