In an electric system for a motor vehicle including a high-tension flywheel ignition generator having an additional low tension A.C. winding working in conjunction with a rectifier, a battery and a multi-position general control switch to supply the lighting and other electrical auxiliaries of the vehicle, batterycharging current is limited during daylight operation of the vehicle by a choke connected between the low tension winding of the generator and the battery, there being an auxiliary winding to the choke which is open-circuited during daylight operation. When the control switch is moved to such a position that the head lamps are brought into operation it causes the auxiliary winding to be short-circuited, thereby reducing the impedance of the choke and allowing charging to continue in spite of the additional load on the generator. The choke may also ensure automatic control of charging current for varying engine speed. Specification 782,824 is referred to.
