776,520. Rolling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Oct. 27, 1955 [Nov. 22, 1954], No. 30739/55. Class 83 (4). A carrier for retracting and supporting driving spindles 16, Fig. 1, of rolling mill rolls 11, 12 comprises a frame 22 adapted to lift cradles 56, which may be individually adjusted in the vertical direction according to the roll setting and have separate means of retracting in the horizontal direction. The cradles 56 are mounted on frames 28, Fig. 2, which are slidable along horizontal pairs of guides 25 pivoted at one end to the drive pinion housing 15 and supported at the free ends on brackets 45 projecting from the frame 22. An hydraulic jack 47 operated from a hand pump 38 raises the frame 22 and when the weight of the spindles 16 is taken by the cradles 56 the frames 28 are retracted by the manual rotation of pinions 64 on the frames 28 and in engagement with racks 37 on the guides 25. Individual adjustment of the height of the cradles 56 relative to the frames 28 to suit different roll settings is obtained by mounting the cradles on pivots 58 and providing limited angular movement through a threaded adjuster 60. Additional pads 68 are provided on the cradles 28 at positions remote from the cradles 56 and are pivotable into an operative position for supporting the spindles when idling.
