Abstract

1,024,931. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. March 8, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9113/62. Heading B3M. A rolling mill includes a carriage, arranged to support the existing or replacement rolls for the mill, and to be supported by a roller table adjacent the mill for handling workpieces. In operation, a carriage 62 is lifted by a crane on to motor driven rollers 46 in front of an edging mill 9 having vertical rolls 15 and 16 (Fig. 1, not shown). Lateral guides 48 and 49, driven by rack and pinion mechanisms 52 and 54, guide the carriage into position, and laterally extending arms on the carriage allow location of the carriage against the roll housing. The rolls, which are normally driven from a single motor through bevel and spur gears and splined shafts 30, are uncoupled by raising the shafts 30, pressure applied to a portion cylinder assembly in the shafts 30 effecting this lifting. Latches 28 are rotated to keep the couplings lifted, the adjusting screws 36 of the rolls are uncoupled and the rolls are pushed by piston cylinder assemblies 42 along previously aligned rails 31. Arms 35 on the roll chocks engage a rod 61 on a previously lowered rod 58 and the rolls are lifted by a piston cylinder assembly 55. The carriage is driven by the rollers 46 into position beneath the rolls and the rolls are lowered into the base of the carriage, co-operating grooves 33 and 66 on the chocks and carriage locating the rolls in the upright position. The carriage is then moved away from the mill and lifted clear by the hook of a crane engaging between links 69. The housing 13 and 14 of the vertical rolls are hingedly attached at 12 to the housing of a slabbing mill 10. Retraction of the rolls is by means of piston 41. The carriage 62 is provided with trunnions 72 so that when the carriage is placed on a support housed in an appropriate pit (Fig. 8, not shown) the whole carriage can be rotated to bring the rolls into a horizontal position.
