Abstract

[Also in Group XXIV] In a vehicle steering gear comprising a rackbar 1 displaceable endwise in a transverse guide tube 3 by rotation of a meshing pinion 9 on the steering shaft, a freely rotatable roller 16 is spring-urged into contact with the bar 1 on the side thereof remote from the pinion 9. As shown the tube 3 is provided at one end with a bearing sleeve 4 within which the bar 1 is a close sliding fit. A plug 6 is in screw-threaded engagement with the sleeve 4 and a spring 8 reacts against the plug 6 on a slipper member 7 thrusting the bar 1 against the opposite side of the sleeve 4. The other end of the tube 3 carries a housing 10 for the pinion 9 engaging teeth 2 on the bar 1. The tube 3 is formed with three longitudinal channels equally spaced around its bore. Opposite the pinion 9 the housing 10 is provided with a projection 11. The bore of the projection 11 comprises a shoulder 18 and grooves 17, the grooves 17 being diametrically opposed and of less depth than the shoulder 18. Engaged with the grooves 17 are the ends of a spindle 15 carrying the roller 16 having a grooved periphery. The spindle 15 is received in open ended slots 14 formed in lugs 13 carried bya cup-shaped element 12 which is a relatively close fit in the projection 11, a spring 20 being provided between a threaded closure 19 and the element 12 to urge the roller 16 into engagement with the rack-bar 1 and maintain the teeth 2 in engagement with the pinion 9. Shims may be provided between the shoulder 18 and closure 19 to allow adjustment of the pressure of the spring 20.
