Abstract
223,310. Egerton, H. W. July 18, 1923. Non-reactive steering- mechanism.-A helical cam or screw-thread b formed with steeplyinclined faces on the hand-wheel shaft a is engaged by a roller c guided so as to move parallel to the axis of the cam. The roller rotates in a housing g carried by a sleeve d having bearings sliding on the shaft a, the sleeve being connected at o to an arm on the rocker-shaft m of the steering-gear. The roller housing slides in a slot in the fixed steering column k and so prevents rotation of the sleeve d. The lower end of the shaft a floats in the column k the upper end being carried in a suitable thrust bearing, which may be provided with a free-wheel device of the kind described in Specification 199,094. Modifications are described in which (1) the sides of the roller engage the faces of the cam, the roller axis being in a plane parallel to the axis of the cam, (2) two or more rollers may be used, and (3) the roller is mounted to slide on a shaft parallel to the cam shaft, and actuates the arm n through a link.
