971,490. Rack and pinion steering mechanisms. ALFORD & ALDER (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 17, 1961], No. 29767/61. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division B7] In a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism for automobiles, wherein arms 40 secured to the rack 16 project through a slot in the rack casing 13 and are connected by links 42 to the hub steering drop arms, the rack 16 is maintained in mesh with, and restrained axially of, the pinion 24 by a spring-loaded half-bearing 32 sliding in a bore of the rack-and-pinion housing portion 12 of the casing, and a taper-sectioned key 35 sliding in the half-bearing is adjustably spring- loaded to engage a taper-sectioned groove 30 in the rack to prevent rack rotation, and mesh deviation, by the links 42 due to rise and fall of the road wheels. Due to its taper the key takes up wear by deeper engagement with the groove. The key is formed on a plug 34 which is loaded by a spring 36 reacting on a screwed plug 37 having a lock-nut 38. The rack is supported remote from the housing portion 12 by a bush 29 in the casing 13. The arms 40, supporting the links 42 by " Silentbloc " (Trade Mark) bushes 41, are screwed into the rack, connected by a plate 45, and locked by the bent ends of a plate 46. The casing 13 is closed by end closures 14, 15 and bellows 47 connected by a sliding sleeve 49. Specification 766,141 is referred to.
