Abstract

1,219,471. Rack-and-pinion gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. 6 March, 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 14704/68. Heading F2Q. In a vehicle rack-and-pinion steering gear including a rack bar 1 longitudinally slidable in a pinion housing (not shown) and a tubular rack bar housing 2 extending from the pinion housing, with the rack bar 1 sliding in a bearing bush 3 in the tubular housing 2, at least one port defined wholly or partly by the tubular housing 2 allows fluid flow externally past the bearing bush 3 as the rack bar moves. As shown, ports 9 are formed in the tubular housing 2 by cutting and pressing in tabs 10 which coact with an end flange 10a of the housing to axially locate the bearing bush 3, which may comprise two polyurethane rings 4, 5, or a nylon or metal bush. Longitudinal ribs 11 in the bellows 7 prevent closure of the ports 9. Alternatively, or in addition to the ports 9, axial grooves may be formed in the outer surface of the bearing bush.
