Abstract

773,903. Reclining chairs. LA-Z-BOY CHAIR CO. Nov. 10, 1954 [Nov. 10, 1953], No. 32583/54. Class 52 (2). The leg-rest 37 of a reclining chair can be retained in raised position relative to the seat 27 when the seat and back have been returned to normal position, the leg-rest actuating link 95, Fig. 4, pivoted at 100 to a curved arm 63 on the back rest 29, being provided with a lost-motion device and the leg-rest being held in its raised position by a central stay bar 167, Fig. 6, the lower end of which has a shoe 161 sliding on a guide bar 135 in the seat frame. A retaining catch of the canted washer type in the shoe grips the bar but can be released by a stop 171 when the back rest is swung to its rearward limit. The actuating link 95 has parallel relatively slidable parts coupled by clips 129, the part connected to the leg-rest linkage having an upturned inner end 181 to engage a pin 185 on the curved arm 63 which latches the leg-rest in stowed position. The seat frame is carried by a parallelogrammic linkage 41, 43 the top bar 49 of which is fixed to the chair side frame and the linkage is swung by a connection 71 to the back rest. The latter is carried by links 87, 89 and moves forwards and downwards as it tilts rearwardly, the seat moving forwards and upwards. The leg-rest has a lazy-tongs type of mounting comprising the actuating link 95, pivoted at 123 to a link 119 pivoted at 121 on the seat frame, and an outer pair of intersecting links 105, 115 providing relatively rapid extension of the legrest.
