In a three position reclining chair, in which, in the upright position, the weight of seat 20 acts through lever 54 to pull the foot-rest 26 into the folded position by applying the tension in link 74 to pivot 78, an effortless transition into the semireclined position is achieved by using the leverage of the back-rest 24 to support the weight, at the rear end of the seat 20, while lever 54 is approaching its deadcentre over relatively stationary pivot 66. As the chair occupant leans back, the backrest 24 moves about pivot 48, as a fulcrum, to raise pivot 42 and allow the lever 54 to be rotated clockwise, into the reversely inclined position (Fig. 2, not shown). The slightly increased angle between the seat and back-rest may be retained in the semireclined position or, alternatively, the further movement may restore the angular relationship present in the upright position. A carrier bar 32 is held in contact with supporting stud 31 by pin 102, during the first transition, and is then allowed to tilt about pivot 34 to provide the fully-reclined position of the chair (Fig. 3, not shown). In another form (Figs. 4-6, not shown) the foot-rest is divided into two mutually foldable parts.
