Abstract

863,490. Reclining chairs &c. FLETCHER, P. S. July 31, 1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 24274/57. Class 52(2). In an adjustable reclining chair or the like a supporting member 32 for the seat 52 forms part of a linkage system movably mounted in the chair frame 20 which, on initial rearward movement of the chair back 62, tilts rearwardly to an intermediate reclining position in which it is held by stops. On further rearward movement of the back a second linkage system causes the seat to rise and the angle with the back to increase until full reclining position is assumed, Fig. 3. A leg rest carried by a swinging arm or a lazytongs linkage and link actuated to move in conjunction with the seat and back may be provided and also locking means to hold the parts in any desired position of adjustment. As shown a platform 54 carrying the seat and back is supported by a member 32 pivoted at its front end, 34, to the chair frame and supported therefrom at the rear end by a toggle linkage 40, 44 normally rearwardly deflected past its dead centre and engaged by a hook 96 on an extenson 66 of the chair back 62. Initial movement of the latter about its pivot 64 folds the toggle forwardly and allows the rear end of the member 32 to rest on a stop 50, the end pivot 68 of the back extension 66 moving meanwhile in a slot 70 in a link 72. Further rearward pivoting of the back actuates the link 72 to rock links 76, 80 to raise the front end of the seat 52. A leg rest 86 pivoted on the seat is raised by a link 90 having one end pivoted to the chair frame 20.
