Class 52(2) In a reclining chair having a rigid seat and backrest unit 20 and an extensible leg-rest 36, the unit pivots to an intermediate position, with extension of the leg-rest, about a first axis and then pivots to a reclining position about a second axis disposed rearwardly of the first axis. As shown in Fig. 1, a downward extension 22 rigid with unit 20 is pivoted at 24 to the forward end of lever 26 normally resting on an abutment 30 and pivoted at 28 by its rear end to the chair frame. The legrest 36 has an actuating linkage as shown pivoted to the chair frame at 58, 64 and having a pivotal connection 56 with the unit 20. In operation, the unit first tilts rearwardly about pivot 24 until extension 22 meets abutment 32 fixed to lever 26, and the leg-rest is extended fully to its end position limited by stop 68 meeting link 48. Further tilting causes unit 20, extension 22 and lever 26 to pivot about pivot 28 until the unit meets stop 34 on the frame, the leg-rest remaining fully extended. As shown in Fig. 3, seat and back unit 120 is mounted by pivoted links 122, 123 on a lever 126 normally resting on abutment 130 and pivoted to the chair frame at 128. The leg rest is carried on a forward extension of lever 126 and is actuated by a downward extension of link 123. In operation, the unit 120 first swings about pivots 124, 127 until link 122 meets stop 132 on lever 126, and then the unit 120, the links and lever 126 swing about pivot 128. As shown in Fig. 5, a downward extension 222 of seat and back unit 220 is pivoted at 224 to a lever 226 mounted on the chair frame by a pair of links 276, 278 of unequal length. The unit first swings about pivot 224 until extension 222 meets stop 232 on lever 226 and then the assembly swings about the pivots connecting links 276, 278 to the chair frame. As shown in Fig. 7, downward extensions of the seat and back unit 320 each carry a pin 333, 335 working in slots 337, 339 formed in a plate 310 fixed to the chair frame and the leg-rest is actuated by a link 345 connected to the rear corner of the unit 320. In operation, the unit 320 tilts to an intermediate position defined by pin 335 resting in the bottom of slot 339 and by pin 333 reaching the upper end of the first part 337a of slot 337. It then tilts to a final position about pin 335, the pin 333 riding along the upper part of slot 337 which is formed as a circular arc about the bottom of slot 339.
