Abstract

A corrosion test apparatus has a test chamber (4) in which the parts to be tested may be supported on a frame, out <PICT:0767628/III/1> side of which lies a liquid atomizer (1) provided with motor-driven centrifugal discs to produce an aerosol and with means to produce an air flow serving to transport the aerosol which is connected to said test chamber by means of at least one feed pipe (3). The test chamber is also provided with an outlet chimney (7) having sealing means, e.g. moistened Raschig rings, to permit the escape of a gas but to retain the aerosol, and all elements of the apparatus which come into contact with the aerosol consist of corrosion-proof material. The numerals refer to the illustrated apparatus in which also an electrical device 2 periodically switches the atomizer on and off according to predetermined test intervals; a branch 9 in the feed tube 3 may supply additives to the aerosol such as hydrochloric acid, ammonia or carbonic acid, in gaseous or misty form; a baffle 8 is provided to disperse the aerosol evenly throughout the test chamber; a thermometer 6 is provided; and the test chamber is constructed of transparent plates of synthetic material glued together. Corrosion products dripping from the test piece may be withdrawn from the underside of the test chamber, and a heater may be provided therein. Liquids which may suitably be used to form the aerosol are water, aqueous solutions, non-aqueous liquors, acids, suspensions and emulsions.
