Abstract

498,536. Aerating liquids. MEURER, N. Aug. 26, 1937, No. 23385. [Class 14 (i)] Apparatus for carbonating liquids in bottles comprises a protective casing 10 having an adjustable support 11 for a bottle and a handle 12 which screws on to the neck 2 of a mixing chamber 3, the neck including an annular packing 6 against which the bottle neck is forced. A gas supply pipe 5, connected to a gas cylinder 17 through a reducing valve 20 and provided with a distributer 5a, passes slidably through the mixing chamber. An air-discharging valve 14 is connected to the interior of the mixing chamber by a U-shaped pipe 15. In use, gas is forced through the distributer 5a into the liquid in the bottle, air and surplus gas being forced out through the valve 14. When the liquid is saturated, the pipe 5 is first moved upwardly to withdraw it from the liquid. The chamber 3 is then vented to atmospheric pressure. Finally, the bottle is removed and corked. In a modification, the handle 12 is replaced by a domed cover, which is connected to the neck of the mixing chamber by a mutilated thread. The casing 10 is removably secured to the cover by a pair of spring-pressed, manually-operated, catches. The pipe 5, outside the chamber 3, has one element of a bayonet catch, the other element of which is arranged on a flexible pipe connected to the cylinder 17, or on a carbon-dioxide cartridge.
