766,953. Fibre opening machines; gins. DODD INVESTMENTS, Ltd., RUSCA, R. A., and YOUNG, R. C. Jan. 17, 1955, No. 1339/55. Class 120 (1). Relates to a cotton opener, cotton gin or like fibre working machine in which a rotating cylinder or the like operates on the fibres within a flue through which the fibres are conveyed by suction-induced air currents. To prevent fibres rolling or twisting or lapping around the cylinder shaft where it passes through the flue wall, the shaft is provided with a disc-shaped radial extension of a diameter large enough to cause particles of fibres on its surface to be thrown off centrifugally; this disc protrudes into a circular opening in the flue wall of a diameter larger than that of the disc by an amount sufficient to allow enough air to convey fibres to enter around the periphery of the disc. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the disc-shaped extension 5 is provided on the doffer shaft 6 of a cotton opening machine as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,365,793, and protrudes through a hole 9 in the casing of flue 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the disc 15 is provided on the doffer shaft 16 of a cotton gin fitted with doffers as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,607,958. The flues may be as described in Specification 764,137. Preferably the diameter of the disc and the speed of rotation of the cylinder are such as to subject tufts &c. of fibre weighing about 0.001 gram to a centrifugal force of about 75 dynes.
