Abstract

Coloured pattern effects are produced on textiles or films made wholly or to a substantial extent of nitrogen-containing synthetic polymeric fibre- or film-forming materials capable of being dyed with anionic dyes by applying a mechanical pressure action in selected areas followed by dyeing, treatment with a resist for the dyestuff also being effected before or after the application of the mechanical pressure action or together with the dyeing operation. The treatment is applicable to textiles and films of polyamides, polymethanes, polyesteramides, polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with, e.g. vinyl chloride or acetate, and the textiles may be in the form of fabrics, slubbings, rovings and yarns, which may be predyed, preprinted, prebleached or pretreated with fluorescent brightening agents. Both the treatment with the resist and the dyeing operation may be locally applied. As applied to slubbings, the dyeing operation may be effected before or after they are spun into yarns and woven into fabrics. Further effects may be obtained by applying a second dyestuff, preferably from the same bath as the first dyestuff, whose acceptance by the fibre is not prevented by the resist. At least some of the steps of the process may be repeated. The mechanical pressure action may be applied by a press, stamp, brush or engraved moulded or friction calender, or by the means described in Specification 752,191, whereby the selected areas are also compressively shrunk. Preferably the mechanical pressure means is heated and the textile or film is treated therewith in the wet condition. Suitable resists, many of which are specified, are gaseous or wet chlorinating agents; mono- or poly-isocyanates or -isothiocyanates; sulphurized phenols and naphthols, metal-containing sulphurized phenols and naphthols and sulphonated sulphurized phenols and naphthols and their substitution products, and condensation products thereof with aldehydes or with amino-aldehydic condensation products such as those described in Specifications 552,015, 640,421 and 681,618; and synthetic tanning agents such as those described in Specifications 375,160 416,191 and 493,997. In some case mordants may be employed for assisting the application of the resist as well the dyestuff, thus in dyeing polyacrylonitrile, a cuprous ion mordant may be employed for this purpose. Dyeing may be effected with level dyeing acid, acid milling, chrome, premetallized, direct, basic, solubilized vat and fluorescent dyestuffs and, when the resist is a isocyanate or isothiocyanate, with disperse dyestuffs. Numerous examples are given.
