Abstract

Coloured pattern effects are produced on textiles made wholly or to a substantial extent of natural or regenerated proteinaceous substances other than silk by applying a mechanized pressure action in selected areas, followed by dyeing, treatment with a resist for the dyestuff also being effected before or after the application of the mechanical pressure action or together with the dyeing operation. The treatment is applicable to textiles of wool and regenerated protein fibres in the form of woven, knitted or matted fabrics, slubbings, rovings and yarns, and the textile may be pre-dyed or preprinted. Both the treatment with the resist and the dyeing operation may be locally applied. As applied to slubbings, the dyeing operation may be effected before or after they are spun into yarns and woven into fabrics. Further effects may be obtained by applying a second dyestuff, preferably from the same batch as the first dyestuff, whose acceptance by the fibre is not prevented by the resist. The steps of the process may be repeated. The mechanical pressure action may be applied by a press, brush or engraved calender, or by the means described in Specification 752,191 whereby the selected areas are also compressively shrunk. Preferably the mechanical pressure means is heated and the textile treated therewith in the wet condition. Specified resists are synthetic tanning agents, sulphurized phenols as described, for example, in Specification 640,421 sulphonated sulphurized phenols, sulphonated phenols and naphthols, formaldehyde derivatives of naphthalene sulphonic acid, bisulphite derivatives of glyoxal, and an acetylation or chlorination treatment. Dyeing may be effected with level dyeing acid, acid milling, chrome, premetallized, direct, solubilized vat and fluoroescent dyestuffs, preferably di- or tri-sulphonated dyestuffs. Numerous examples are given. The Provisional Specification refers also to the treatment of proteinaceous films. Specification 759,595 also is referred to.
