Abstract
In the dyeing or printing of fibrous material of a thermoplastic synthetic resin, improved dyeing effects are obtained by treating the material with a solution of cellulose, a protein or polyvinyl alcohol, the cellulose, protein or polyvinyl alcohol then being precipitated, or in the case of polyvinyl alcohol insolubilized, on the material prior to the dyeing or printing operation. In addition, the treatment imparts increased wearing properties, an improved feel or handle, an increased resistance to light radiation and to the build-up of static electricity and an increased water-absorption to the dyed material. The process is applicable to dyeing with acid, direct, vat, acetate, indigosol and naphthol dyestuffs as well as to printing and discharge printing. The solution, which may contain softening, hydrophobing or flameproofing agents, may be applied locally, if desired, when two-colour effects may be obtained by dyeing with different dyestuffs having affinity for the treated and untreated material. During or after precipitation or insolubilization of the substance a treatment with an aldehyde or a heating step to a temperature higher than the softening point of the fibrous material may be applied. Heating may be effected indirectly or by direct contact with hot gases, liquids or solids, and may be effected during hot washing, drying, embossing, glazing or ironing. Specified fibrous materials are staple fibres, yarns, threads, fabric and knitted goods of polyamides, polyurethanes, polyesters and polyvinyl compounds, which may be associated with non-thermoplastic fibrous materials. Fibrous material treated according to the process may be associated with untreated fibrous material or natural fibres in weaving, knitting or embroidery. Examples describe (1) the treatment of polyamide fibres with cellulose xanthate solution, followed by precipitation with aqueous hydrochloric acid, drying and dyeing with a direct dyestuff; (2) the printing of a polyester fibre-fabric with cellulose xanthate solution followed by precipitation, drying, and dyeing first with a direct dyestuff and then with an acetate dyestuff to give a two-colour effect; (3) the printing of a polyester fibre-fabric with ammoniacal casein solution followed by precipitation with aqueous oxalic acid-formaldehyde solution, drying and dyeing with an acid dyestuff and then with an acetate dyestuff to yield a two-colour effect; (4) the treatment of polyacrylonitrile fibres with a cellulose solution as in (1) and then dyeing with an indigosol dyestuff; and (5) the printing of a polyacrylonitrile fibre-fabric with aqueous polyvinyl alcohol followed by heating at 130 DEG C. to insolubilize the polyvinyl alcohol and dyeing the printed parts with a direct dyestuff.
