Abstract
754,402. Oxy-acetylene burners. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. Aug. 25, 1954 [Aug. 28, 1953], No. 24719/54. Class 75(1). An oxy-acetylene burner 10 in which mixing and partial combustion takes place within the burner body comprises a discharge passage 30 having an outlet through an external face of the burner body, oxygen and acetylene passages 24, 28 transversely intersecting the discharge passage at its inlet and a recess 29 positioned at the junction of the oxygen, acetylene and discharge passages and having a volume sufficient to promote sustained mixing and combustion both before and after a reduction in the volume in the region of the junction and in the acetylene passage by the deposition of carbon during use. The burner shown is of elongated form and comprises a plurality of discharge passages 30 each being associated with one of a plurality of oxygen passages 24 and, with one of a plurality of acetylene passages 28 and with one of a plurality of recesses 29. Oxygen is supplied by a conduit 14 to a header passage 20 and passes through metering ports 22 to a common passage 23 in the form of a longitudinal channel in the lower face of an upper body part 11. The oxygen passages 24 are in the form of transverse slots in the upper body part 11 and extend inwardly from the longitudinal channel 23. The acetylene is supplied by a conduit 15 to a header passage 25 and passes through metering ports 26 to a channel-shaped passage 27. The acetylene passages 28 are in the form of transverse slots in the upper body part 11 and extend inwardly from the channel passage 27 in axial alignment with the oxygen passages. The recesses 29 are formed in the under face of the upper body part 11. The discharge passages 30 extend through a port plate 12 secured by bolts 13 to the upper body part 11. The crosssectional area of the acetylene slot 28 may be between one and three times that of the oxygen slot 24 for its entire length or for the part of its length in the region of the recess 29. Carbon deposit in the recess 29 and the acetylene slot can be removed by cutting off the acetylene feed and burning the deposit with the oxygen stream. Cooling water is supplied by a conduit 16 to a passage in the upper body part 11 and then passes through registering bores in one end of the upper body part 11 and in the corresponding end of the plate 12 to two longitudinal passages 33 in the plate 12, one on either side of the row of discharge passages 30. The other ends of the longitudinal passages 33 are connected through bores and a passage in the upper body part 11 to an outlet conduit 17.
