970,222. Liquid fuel combustion apparatus. A. F. ANDEN. March 29, 1963 [April 17, 1962; Feb. 23, 1963], No. 12518/63. Heading F4B. [Also in Division F1] Liquid fuel combustion apparatus comprises a combustion chamber of circular cross-section open at one end, a nozzle for the supply of atomized fuel at the other end, which is connected to a source of compressed primary air, and a plurality of inclined guide vanes in the combustion zone extending nearly across the width of the chamber. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the primary air and atomized fuel from the nozzle 7 are given a rotation by vanes 6 in the air supply cone 3 which is of the opposite sense to that given to air passing through the annular passage 4 by vanes 5. Helicoidal wings 14 mounted on a hub 15 in the combustion chambers directs the fuel-air mixture towards the walls of the chamber with a rotation which is opposed to that of the secondary air flowing in through channels 13, which are inclined towards the fuel supply end of the chamber. The secondary air flows through annular channels 11, 9 to the inlets 13, forming a cooling jacket and becoming heated. In a modification, Fig. 3, the wings 34a, 34b in the combustion chamber 23 are formed by inclined plates which are adjustable longitudinally of the chamber. A secondary combustion chamber 24 of enlarged crosssection, has tertiary air supply passages 32, supplying air with a whirl opposed to that of the air supplied to the combustion chamber 23 by passages 31. Further air is supplied near the outlet of the secondary combustion chamber 24 by passages 33 having an inclination opposed to that of inlets 32.
