745,746. Rotary compressor. BRITISH INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 27, 1954 [April 27, 1953], No. 11534/53. Class 110(2) A rotary compressor (or engine) as described in Specification 665,484, in which the lobes are modified so that each of their cooperating faces (vi) is in the form of a volute formed from arcs of circles approximating to an Archimedean spiral or an arc of one circle, this approximating to an Archimedean spiral over an arc of about 90 degrees over which the lobes co-operate, the lobes of a pair of rotors touch along a line parallel to the axes of those rotors, this line moving substantially in the plane of the rotors' axes. The casing has by-pass ports (vii) which enable fluid to pass from chamber (iv) to chamber (i) during the end of the intake process. Similar ports may be formed between the compression chambers. Various positions of rotor supporting discs with various arrangements of the rotors on shafts are described with the object of reducing the swept volume to total bulk ratio and balancing the centrifugal forces acting on the rotor disc.
