Abstract

742,747. Cow-milkers. BODMIN, S. E. April 28, 1954 [July 7, 1953], No. 18786/53. Class 84. A milking-machine incorporates an apparatus which is adaptable for vacuum-break, continuous suction, or bucket-milking operation. The apparatus comprises a chamber 1 closed at its lower end by a flap valve 4, a passage 5 connected to the vacuum line of the milking apparatus, two control cocks 19 and 20 and a ported slide valve 15 adjustable to vary the mode of operation of the machine. The ports 16, 17, 18 are, respectively, connected to the pulsator, atmosphere and suction side of the milk claw. The passage 12 leads to the pulsation side of the claw. In vacuum-break operation the slide and control cocks are set as shown in the Figure. The passage 5 is open to put the chamber under a partial vacuum and with the slide valve in its lower position (not as shown) the suction side of the claw is under vacuum, and when the slide is raised, passage 11 is momentarily closed to effect the vacuum break. To produce a continuous suction milking action, cock 19 is opened to allow passage 11 and port 18 to communicate, when a continuous suction results whatever the position of the slide. Bucket milking is effected by closing passage 5 and opening cock 20. In the up position of the slide the vacuum in the chamber is broken and the accumulated milk discharges via the flap valve; on lowering the slide the suction is reapplied to the chamber 1.
