Abstract

Aluminium alloys, the mechanical properties of which after solution treatment and quenching followed by cold working fall to values below that obtainable without cold working, and which show negligible age-hardening at room temperature, are subjected, after cold working, to a temperature of 190-220 DEG C. for a period not in excess of five minutes. The heat treatment may be carried out in an oil bath or by electrical resistance or high-frequency treatment. Alloys which may be used are those containing in addition to Al, Cu 2-7 per cent, Cd up to 0.25 per cent, with or without Fe up to 1 per cent, Si up to 13 per cent, Ni up to 2 per cent, Ti up to 0.5 per cent, Mn up to 2 per cent, Cr up to 1 per cent, Mo up to 1 per cent, W up to 1 per cent and Zn up to 1 per cent. The Cd may be replaced wholly or in part by up to 0.1 per cent Sn. Mg should not be present in more than 0.02-0.05 per cent.
