Abstract
An aluminium alloy has the following composition:-Mg 2.00-5.00 per cent, Zn 3.00-8,00 per cent, one or more of Mn, Ni, Co 0.25-2.00 per cent in total, Si 0.02-1.50 per cent, Fe 0.02-1.50 per cent, with Sn greater than 0.10 and less than 1.50 per cent, or Sb 0.41-1.5 per cent or both together greater than 0.10 and up to 1.50 per cent in total, Al the remainder. The alloy may contain Cu not exceeding 0.19 per cent, one or more of Cr, Be, B, Ca, Ti, Nb, Ce, Mo, La, Li, Ag, Ta, Te, Tl, Th, W, V, Zr and Yt not exceeding 1.25 per cent in total, the Cr, if present, being less than 0.50 per cent unless the total of the elements Mg, Zn, Ni, Sb and Cu exceeds 6.00 per cent. The alloy may also contain one or more of Bi, Pb, Cd, Ba and P not exceeding 0.30 per cent in total, so that the Pb will always be less than 0.10 per cent when Si and Fe are both present in amounts of 0.40 per cent and over. The alloy may be used in the worked condition and may be subjected to solution treatment for example at 490-530 DEG C. for 1/2 to 4 hours, followed by quenching in water or other medium and natural or artificial ageing. The latter may be carried out at 100-160 DEG C. for 3 to 24 hours, followed by cooling in air.
