Abstract

Nickel-base alloys which are strong and resistant to corrosion at high temperatures have the following ranges of compositions:-Aluminium 2-14 per cent., chromium 1-23 per cent., cobalt 0.1-10 per cent., nickel the remainder. The total of aluminium and chromium must be between 10 and 25 per cent. The cobalt may be partly replaced by iron, but at least 0.1 per cent. of cobalt must always be present. The alloy may contain up to a total of 5 per cent. of manganese or copper or both replacing a like content of nickel, and may also contain up to a total of 7 per cent. of molybdenum or tungsten or some of each replacing a like content of nickel. Up to a total of 0.5 per cent. of one or more of magnesium, calcium, barium, boron, strontium, zinc, cerium and other rare earth metals or misch-metal may be included. The alloy may contain, up to 1 per cent. of any one and up to 2 per cent. in total, one or more of silicon, titanium, vanadium, zirconium, tantalum, beryllium, niobium, silver, antimony and tin, and may also contain up to 0.5 per cent. of carbon. These alloys may be heat treated by solution treatment for 10-30 hours at 1050 DEG -1250 DEG C. followed by ageing for 10-35 hours at 650 DEG -850 DEG C. Die cast articles may be given the ageing treatment only. The corrosion resistance of the alloys renders them suitable for the exhaust valves of internal combustion engines and the blades of internal combustion turbines.
