Abstract
Butyl rubber is reacted with from 0.25 to 2.0 parts per 100 parts thereof of either 4-hydrocarbon - 2,6 - dimethylolphenols or heat-reactive oil-soluble self-condensation products thereof under such conditions as to render at least 10 per cent of the butyl rubber benzol insoluble. The reaction may take place at 235 DEG F. or, preferably, between 300 DEG F. and 370 DEG F. by mastication in a Banbury mixer with such materials as carbon black, clay, calcium carbonate, precipitated hydrated silica or calcium silicate, non-volatile hydrocarbon oil, phenyl beta-naphthylamine, zinc stearate, stearic acid and 2,6-ditertiary-butyl-para-cresol. The reacted butyl rubber may be compounded with the usual vulcanizing ingredients and vulcanized. U.S.A. Specification 2,392,855 is referred to.
