Abstract
A mixture of butyl rubber and a filler selected from precipitated hydrated silica, precipitated hydrated calcium silicate and kaolin, the filler having been reacted with 10-undecrenyltrichlorosilane and having an average particle size not greater than 10 microns, is vulcanized. The filler may be reacted with the silane before incorporation in the rubber or the rubber, filler and silane may be hot-milled at, e.g. 250-400 DEG F., preferably in the presence of an alkaline earth metal carbonate. Zinc oxide and other ingredients such as stearic acid and sulphur may be added after the hot-milling treatment. The vulcanizates may be used in the manufacture of inner tubes for pneumatic tyres. Specification 715,244 is referred to.ALSO:A filler for butyl rubber comprises the reaction product of precipitated hydrated silica or precipitated hydrated calcium silicate or kaolin and 10-undecenyltrichlorosilane, the filler having an average particle size not greater than 10 microns. The amount of silane employed may be generally from 5-15 per cent of the weight of the silicon containing material. The silane may be added to a slurry of the unreacted filler in a low-boiling hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene or petroleum ether, and heated at reflux, or the unreacted filler may be placed in a tube and saturated with the silane passed therethrough.
