Abstract

662,106. Depolymerized rubber compositions. HARDMAN, K. VAN H. June 30, 1949, No. 17368/49. Class 70 Depolymerized rubber is vulcanized in the presence of dry calcium oxide and/or dry phosporous pentoxide. The depolymerized rubber is obtained by heating crude, scrap vulcanized crude or reclaim rubber to temperatures between 518‹F and 572'F. Vulcanization should not be effected above 350‹F. Elemental sulphur, 0.5 to 50 parts to 100 parts of depolymerized rubber, is the vulcanizing agent and any sulphur already present is not allowed for in the above proportion. If more than 50 parts of sulphur is used it acts merely as a filler. Acceleraters, 0.5 to 5 parts to 100 parts of rubber, specified are mercaptobenzothiazole, tetramethylthiuram disulphide, diphenylguanidine and di-o-tolyl-guanidine singly or in admixture; fillers, 5 to 180 parts to 100 parts of rubber, specified are clay, carbon black, and blanc fixe, and pigments, e.g. zinc oxide, and plasticisers may also be added. The oxides of calcium and phosphorous prevent porosity in the product which may be used as an adhesive (vulcanizing occurring in situ) or as a coating for fabrics, metals or plastics.
