726,498. Automatic control systems for arcs, BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 27, 1953, No. 20776/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). The invention is applied to electric arc furnace control systems in which direct voltages, produced through copper-oxide rectifiers in dependence on A.C. are voltage or current, are arranged in opposition to control a D.C. servomotor, e.g. through a magnetic amplifier as in Specification 694,745, moving a furnace electrode to maintain a constant arc current, a tap changer associated with a transformer supplying the electrode being ganged to a rheostat in the voltage responsive circuit so that the voltage dependent on arc voltage is independent of the tap chosen. The following arrangements to produce an arc current dependent on the setting of the tap changer are described: (a) a further rheostat ganged to the tap changer may be substituted for that in the voltage responsive circuit at will by the operation of a change-over switch; (b) an additional rheostat ganged to the tap changer may -be introduced in shunt to the arc current responsive circuit at will by the operation of a change-over switch; (c) an additional rheostat ganged to the tap changer may be introduced in shunt to the arc voltage responsive circuit at will by the operation of a change-over switch; (d) the rheostat in the voltage responsive circuit may be arranged to produce a voltage dependent on the setting of the tap changer.
