A dip transfer welding apparatus having a voltage control means for the arc and electrode wire feed control, has a fixed choke or set of fixed chokes at least one of which has a non air gapped core providing a swinging choke characteristic so as to be effective over a range of current values to produce the appropriate dip transfer operation. The swinging choke may have a shell type iron core formed by interleaved plates, and an auxiliary choke having an air gap in the core may be included, in series, particularly for currents over 200 A. In one example, the swinging choke characteristic is linear when the inductance-current relationship is plotted on logarithmic coordinates.
