A capacity transducer for measuring and controlling the position of a tool relative to a workpiece comprising a movable electrode and a number of fixed cooperating electrodes arranged in line, fed with a progressively increasing alternating voltage as described in Specification 935, 241 is modified by restricting the voltage difference to the two fixed electrodes adjacent the moving electrode, thereby increasing the sensitivity of the apparatus. As shown (Fig. 1) an A.C. voltage at terminals 12 is connected to a pair of fixed electrodes 10c, 10d from the series 10a to 10f, as selected by switches 11a to 11f. The potential on moving electrode 11 is indicative of its position with respect to fixed electrodes 10c, 10d, and is compared in an automatic balancing arrangement with the potential at a reference point 17. The potential distribution along the line of electrodes 10a to 10f is made uniform by auxiliary voltages from the secondary windings 19a to 19f of a transformer 19.
