Abstract
Bis-chloromethyl ether is made by reacting chlorosulphonic acid with formaldehyde and concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid. Preferably the chlorosulphonic acid is gradually added to a suspension of paraformaldehyde in concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid. The reaction is suitably carried at 0 DEG to 10 DEG C. using amounts of formaldehyde and chlorosulphonic acid sufficient to give 1.1 to 1.4 mols. of available chlorine per mole of formaldehyde. For example, the ratio of HCl, chlorosulphonic acid and formaldehyde may be 0.25 : 0.85 : 1. The reaction quantities should preferably be chosen to give a final sulphuric acid concentration of about 50 to 100 per cent, preferably about 90 per cent. Many examples are given.
