522,644. Ethers of methylolureas. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 16, 1938, No. 36721. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Ethers of methylolureas are manufactured by reacting a water wet methylolurea with a monohydric alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, and neutralizing the acid catalyst after substantial completion of the reaction. The methylolurea may contain 5-50 per cent. of water. In examples : (1) dimethylolurea containing 30 per cent. of water is warmed with isobutyl alcohol in the presence of phosphoric acid, yielding the diisobutyl ether ; (2) the isobutyl alcohol of (1) is replaced by n-butyl alcohol; (3) dimethylolurea (30 per cent. water wet) is warmed with sec. butyl alcohol in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid ; (4) the sec. butyl alcohol of (3) is replaced by isopropyl alcohol, and (5) by methyl alcohol; (6) monomethylolurea (8 per cent. water wet) is warmed with isobutyl alcohol in the presence of hydrochloric acid ; (7) the isobutyl alcohol of (6) is replaced by n-butyl alcohol. The aralkyl ethers, e.g. the benzyl ether, of mono- and dimethylolurea may be similarly prepared.
