Abstract

In the production of thioplasts by the condensation of dichlorethyl acetal and an alkali polysulphide decomposition of the acetal during the condensation is prevented by adding to the acetal prior to or concurrently with the addition of the polysulphide, an antioxidant, i.e. hydroquinone, phenol, aniline, p-aminophenol or phenyl beta naphthylamine as specified in French Specification 898,612. A solution of sodium polysulphide, NaOH, and MgCl2 in water is heated to boiling point whereupon dichloracetal prepared as in French Specification 898,612 and containing 0.5-1 per cent phenyl-beta-naphthylamine is added drop by drop. The condensate is precipitated and after washing 100 parts are mixed with 25 parts active carbon, 5 parts rubber, 10 parts lead oxide, 1 part stearic acid, 1 part lead dithiocarbamate and 0.5 parts phenyl beta naphthylamine on differential rolls. The mixture vulcanizes at 135-140 DEG C. in ten minutes. Specifications 422,826 and 450,210, [Group III], are referred to.
