Abstract

717,132. Vices. CHAPMAN, H. F. Sept. 30, 1952 [Oct. 5, 1951], No. 23224/51. Class 61 In a vice comprising two jaw carrying levers 19, 20 mounted side by side each on a separate pivot which is screwed into the pillar 11 carried by a base plate 10, means for closing the jaws against the action of the spring 27 is provided at the end of the levers remote from the jaws. The remote ends of the levers are supported by a pillar 13. A top plate 31 bolted to the pillar 13 extends over the levers 19, 20 and has apertures to receive the pivot bolts. The means for closing the jaws comprises a cam 25 fixed to an operating lever 24, the end of the lever being rotatably mounted in the pillar 12, and the cam having bush-like side extensions 25<SP>1</SP>, 25<SP>2</SP> which bear against the plate 31 and pillar 12 respectively. The end surfaces of the cam bear on hardened pads 29, 29<SP>1</SP>, the projection of the pads from the levers being adjustable to vary the grip applied to a workpiece. Detachable jaws 21, 22 are screwed to the arms. An adjustable support 32 for a workpiece is detachably secured to the base plate. A detachable carrier 34 for a drill bush is provided. In modifications the cam is replaced by a hydraulic or pneumatic device.
