Abstract

674,063. Vices. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., and STONE, V. 0. May 30, 1950 [April 22, 1949], No. 10714/49. Class 61 (ii). In a vice having clamping jaws slidably supported on a body or base by resilient means, the jaws are connected to links or link structures through which clamping pressure is applied to a workpiece positioned between the jaws which exert downward pressure on the workpiece and force it down on the bed of the vice against the action of the resilient means. The jaws 5 and 8 are each resiliently supported on the body 1 by a leaf spring or a layer of rubber 10 bonded between the underside of the jaw and a plate 10a the jaws being slidable on the upper surface of the vice body 1. The body 1 is transversely slotted to receive a sliding block 2 having a screw threaded bore for co-operation with the clamping screw 3. A pair of links 4 are pivoted to projecting trunnions on the block 2 and are provided with upward extensions 4a which carry the movable jaw 5. A second pair of links 7 carrying the jaw 8 are pivoted to an adjustable pivot 6 inserted through bores in the body 1 and through elongated slots in the links 4. The links may be replaced by integral bifurcated link structures. In modifications the closing movement of the jaws is effected by compressed air, by hydraulic power or cam action. In other modifications the jaw blocks are operated by a single right and left hand screw or by independent screws. In further modifications the jaws are self aligning or angularly adjustable. The Provisional Specification describes L-shaped work supporting devices attached to the base and sliding jaw blocks constructed to accommodate leaf springs.
