Abstract

<PICT:0714037/III/1> Apparatus for counter-currently contacting a gas or vapour with a fluidized solid comprises a tower divided into superimposed chambers by perforated plates 6-9 through which the gas ascends, downcomers 11-13 placed alternatively at opposite sides of the tower and each having its entrance above the level of the discharge end of the downcomer at the opposite side of the same chamber thereby causing a bed of fluidized solid to flow across each chamber, and one or more series of vertical or inclined baffles 14, 15 arranged parallel to one another across the path of the flowing solid. When several rows of baffles 15 are used, they may be staggered across the path of the gases. The baffles may be rotatable about horizontal shafts coinciding with their longitudinal axis 14a or one edge 15a and mechanism (not shown) may be provided for varying their inclinations in unison. The apparatus is applicable to catalytic reactions such as the cracking of hydrocarbons, and to the separation of gases by solid absorbents.
