Abstract

In a process for the countercurrent contacting of gases with fluidized solid (e.g. catalyst) in a vessel having a series of superimposed zones separated by transverse perforated plates which carry dense layers of solid fluidized by gas passing through the perforations, the solid passing to a lower plate through a downcomer is divided into a multiplicity of streams so as to avoid entrainment of gas by the solid. The transverse perforated plates may be provided with bubble caps. As shown, the fluidized solid flows over a weir 1 having a perforated portion 6 which may be inclined <PICT:0694073/III/1> over the downcomer; the portion 6 may alternatively be made of wire mesh or similar material.
