Abstract

734,218. Vapour-liquid contacting apparatus. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Feb. 6, 1953 [March 26, 1952], No. 3420/53. Class 55 (2). In a fractionating or like tower, the inclined baffles 42 nearer each downcomer weir 15 have a smaller angle of inclination to the horizontal than those nearer the end of each plate 11 on to which the liquid flows from the weir of the plate next above. Preferably the baffles have the form of punched-up tabs and those nearest the weir have angles of inclination in the range 5-15 degrees, those in the middle of the plate have angles in the range 12-24 degrees, and those furthest from the weir angles in the range 30-60 degrees. The vapour passing through apertures 12 is stated to be most effective in assisting the passage of liquid across the plate when this arrangement of tab angles is adopted.
