Abstract

709,530. Reversing gearing; friction clutches. HINDMARCH, T. Dec. 10, 1952 [Dec. 20, 1951], No. 29831/51. Class 80 (2) A reversing gear, for transmitting drive from a plurality of prime movers to a common output shaft, comprises pinions 2, 3 which may be selectively clutched by fluid pressure means to an input shaft 1 driven by a prime mover and which mesh, directly and through an idler 22 respectively, with wheels 20, 21 fast on an intermediate shaft 19 with a pinion 23 which meshes with a common wheel 25 on an output shaft 24. A disc 10 fast on the input shaft 1 forms one wall of pressure chambers the other walls of which are formed by clutch members 11, 12 splined to the shaft 1 for sliding into engagement with clutch members 6, 7 integral with the pinions 2, 3. Sealing means are provided between the member 10 and skirts 15, 16 on the members 11, 12. The clutches are disengaged by .continuous oil pressure applied to small chambers 17, 18. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates an embodiment having four prime movers connected by similar transmissions to a common output shaft. The gears may be of different sizes to allow the use of different prime movers and the arrangement is specially applicable to ships and locomotives.
