Abstract

1,237,214. Reverse gear casing. P.R. MOTORS Ltd. 25 Sept., 1968 [4 July, 1967], No. 30730/67. Headings F2C and F2D. The casing of a reverse gear having input, intermediate and output shafts 50, 51, 52 is formed in two parts 53A, 53B connected together on a plane 54 containing the axes of the input and intermediate shafts 50, 51 to facilitate removal of the shafts. The shaft bearings and seals engage recesses in the two parts of the casing. The intermediate shaft 51 is continuously driven from the input shaft 50 through a gear pair 67, 68 and gears 65, 69, which mesh an output pinion 71, are selectively clutched at 66, 70 to the input and intermediate shafts 50, 51 for forward and reverse ratios. The clutches 66, 70 are hydraulically operated multiplate friction clutches supplied with pressure oil from a control 75 through a fitting 72 which plugs into the upper casing part 53B. Cooling oil is supplied to the clutches through the fitting 72 and ducts 78. A gear pump 64 driven by the input or intermediate shaft supplies pressure oil to the system. In the event of failure of the pressure oil supply one of the gears 65, 69 may be connected to its shaft by sliding a ring 83 splined to the gear hub into toothed engagement with the clutch back plate.
