Abstract

<PICT:0702394/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0702394/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0702394/IV(a)/3> In the manufacture of threads from melt-spun synthetic linear polymer filaments, e.g. polyamide filaments, the filaments are first pre-stretched and simultaneously washed while being treated with hot water or wet steam, then post-stretched at about 190 DEG -200 DEG C. and simultaneously dried, then wound under tension on a spool and finally twisted. The post-stretching and drying operations are effected by hot air or by high frequency electrical heating. Between the pre- and post-stretching steps the filaments are preferably treated with a lubricant. As shown (Fig. 1) the filaments m are stretched between devices I and II while being passed through a hot water bath b (or wet steam chamber). They are lubricated at c and further stretched between devices II and III while being passed through a hot air chamber d maintained at 190 DEG -200 DEG C. Finally they <PICT:0702394/IV(a)/4> are wound on a spool g from which they are subsequently unwound and twisted. The stretching devices and post- and pre-stretching chambers may be accommodated in a common housing as shown in Fig. 2. The stretching chambers are shown in greater detail in Figs. 3 and 4.
