Abstract

<PICT:0729580/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0729580/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0729580/IV (a)/3> In a process for reducing the plastic extensibility of yarns, filaments, threads or fabrics consisting of a synthetic linear polymer, especially a polyamide, an already cold-drawn yarn, filament, thread or fabric formed therefrom is stretched again at an elevated temperature, and the stretching tension is maintained for at least five minutes while the yarn &c. or fabric is kept at a temperature from about 30 DEG to about 60 DEG C. below the melting point of the polymer. As shown, Fig. 1, fabric 5 made from cold-drawn yarns of polycaprolactam is fed from roller 1 and then wound on roller 2, successive lengths of fabric being gripped and stretched between clamps 3 and 4 at about 100 DEG C., and then heated to about 180 DEG C. under the stretching tension for about 1 hour. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the fabric 5 is stretched between a roller 11 and a braking system 7, 8, 9, 10 by applying tension to a housing 12 in the direction of arrow 6; the apparatus operates intermittently, each part of the fabric being subjected to stretching for 30 minutes at 165-185 DEG C. at a tension slightly below the breaking tension. A cold-drawn yarn or cord made from polycaprolactam is, in one example, stretched at 100 DEG C. by 38 per cent, heated in the stretched condition to 160-175 DEG C. for 45 minutes, and cooled while the tension is maintained. In another example the cord is drawn continuously through a bath heated to 175 DEG C., each part of the cord remaining in the bath for 7 minutes and being stretched therein by 40.5 per cent. In a further example, the stretching is performed at 100 DEG C. in steam; the stretching is effected by winding the cord around two rollers 16, 17 (Fig. 3) and applying tension in the direction of arrow 6, the rollers being kept apart by a rod 18 to maintain tension during the subsequent heating and cooling.
